1944年、北海道滝川市生まれ。多摩美術大学卒業後、カリフォルニア大学ロサンゼルス校(UCLA)大学院修士課程修了。グラフィックデザイナーとして活動していた1970年代半ば、アクソノメトリック(透視)図法によるアルファベット作品を発表し、世界的に注目される。千葉大学、カリフォルニア大学(UCLA)で教鞭をとったほか、多摩美術大学美術学部二部学科長を務め、現在、同大学名誉教授。代表作はニューヨーク近代美術館(MoMA)をはじめ、世界40カ所以上の公立美術館に永久収蔵されている。外務大臣表彰、勝見勝賞、毎日デザイン賞特別賞、iFデザイン賞、グッドデザイン賞など受賞多数。   現在、北海道新十津川町のアトリエ「かぜのび」を拠点に、主にパブリックアートの制作を続けている。

Born in Takikawa, Hokkaido in 1944, Igarashi graduated from Tama Art University in Tokyo, then earned his master’s degree at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). While working as a graphic designer in the mid-1970s, he garnered international acclaim for his axonometric alphabet designs. He has taught at Chiba University and UCLA, and headed the Design Department at Tama Art University, where he is now professor emeritus. His works can be found in the permanent collections of over 40 public museums worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He has won numerous awards, among them the Foreign Minister’s Commendation, the Masaru Katsumi Award, the Mainichi Design Prize, the iF Design Award, and the Good Design Award. He now lives in Sapporo, Hokkaido and works on public art and other projects at his atelier Kazenobi in Shintotsukawa.
