商業・住空間、家具、工業デザイン、地域開発など幅広い活動を国内外で展開。
90年代発表した折り畳み式の茶室「受庵・想庵・行庵」を携えてヨーロッパの美術館でも巡回展を行い、世界に日本の伝統美を伝えた内田繁氏。
インテリアデザイナーという視点から生み出された内田氏のプロダクトデザインは、折々の時代性を見据えつつも、常に日本の伝統美を根底に置き、その本質を追求したものでした。
江戸時代から続く岐阜の特産品であり、平成7年に国の指定する「伝統的工芸品」にも選ばれた「岐阜提灯」の技術を生かした照明シリーズ Paper Moon もその1つ。
岐阜県美濃地方の薄く高品質な美濃和紙と岐阜の豊かな自然が育んだ竹を材料に、熟練の職人による手仕事で製作される岐阜提灯。
その技術を生かして作られたPaper Moonは愛らしい柔らかなフォルムが魅力的なテーブルランプ/床置き照明です。
無理のない素朴で自然なフォルムや、和紙ごしの和やかな灯りには、どなたも親しみを感じるのではないでしょうか。
「おもち」や「たけのこ」「ひょうたん」を思わせるユーモラスなフォルムや和紙の質感が極めて「日本的」であるのと同時に、和洋を問わずどんな空間にもしっくりと馴染みます。
Shigeru Uchida was active both in Japan and internationally across a wide range of fields, including commercial and residential spaces, furniture, industrial design, and regional development.
In the 1990s, he introduced his foldable tea rooms“JI-AN,” “SO-AN,” and “GYO-AN,”and held traveling exhibitions in museums across Europe, sharing the beauty of traditional Japanese aesthetics with the world.
From the perspective of an interior designer, Uchida’s product designs consistently pursued the essence of Japanese tradition while responding to the spirit of each era.
One such example is the Paper Moon lighting series, which utilizes the techniques of “Gifu Chochin” lanternstraditional crafts from Gifu dating back to the Edo period and officially designated as a Traditional Craft of Japan in 1995.
Gifu lanterns are handcrafted by skilled artisans using thin, high-quality Mino washi paper from the Mino region and bamboo nurtured by Gifu’s rich natural environment.
Paper Moon, created using these techniques, is a table and floor lamp characterized by its soft, charming form.
Its simple, natural silhouette and the gentle light filtered through washi paper create a warm and inviting atmosphere.
With playful shapes reminiscent of “mochi,” “bamboo shoots,” and “gourds,” along with the unique texture of washi, it embodies a distinctly Japanese aesthetic while blending seamlessly into both modern and traditional interiors.
